Windows Instance Receives a Private IP

Problem: Windows instance receives a private IP address (169.254.x.x)
Cause: There are two scenarios that may cause this:

  1. When Windows first boots up, it may temporarily receive a private IP address while it's identifying the network. In this case, it will receive a real IP after a few minutes
  2. When Windows machines can't get an IP from the DHCP server they will get auto-assigned a private IP address. This can happen if there are no more IPs available in the vnet's IP range or if the vnet services application is not running
