Cannot Cleanly Shutdown/Restart Linux Instances

Problem: A Linux instance consistently fails to reboot or shut down when "Restart" or "Shut down" is selected in the Ignite Management Portal, but "Force restart" and "Force shut down" succeed.

Cause: Shutdown and restart commands send an ACPI signal to the instance, which can be ignored if the ACPI daemon is not installed or not configured properly on the instance.

Solution: Install the ACPI daemon on the instance:

  • For CentOS:
    • Log into the instance
    • Run these commands:
      • yum install acpid
      • chkconfig acpid on
      • service acpid start
  • For Ubuntu:
    • Log into the instance
    • Run this command:
      • sudo aptitude install acpid
